- John reimagines the first song he ever recorded under his own name in 1996. KUKUC
- LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA—During the very crazy times of 2020, John teamed up with his friend and producer Benny Reid to re-arrange his classic song KUKUC. The goal was not to change the song but to make it more contemporary as well as more exciting. With KUKUC 2020 they did just that.
- After John and Benny finished the composing and arranging of the tune, it was time to get the right players to record it. John said, “I work with so many amazing musicians all the time but I knew right away what players would be perfect for KUKUC 2020. I already had a great sax player (my partner Benny Reid) so that was all set. And, man did he crush it! My longtime piano player Misha Tsiganov played on the demo template track and he’s a monster player, so I had the keyboard player all set. Next I had to choose a bass player. I knew right away that Mike Pope would be perfect, plus we have a 15 year history of playing together. I was blown a way when I heard his final track!! He did a fantastic job. Next up was choosing a guitar player. Just like with Mike Pope I immediately knew that my long time band mate and friend, Chieli Minucci, was the one. And, man did he deliver. Monster guitar tracks came my way in record time. ”

The official launch of the DHARMA 2.0 videos is tomorrow, and I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has contributed to my new DHARMA 2.0 Video Project. First off, thanks to all of the amazing musicians who played so well. Special thanks to Brandon Dove for helping me arrange two of the songs and for playing such great guitar parts and solos. To John Shannon for his amazing vocal performances. I am very lucky to have him featured on these songs! Benny Reid for playing monstrous sax and for his great arrangement of one of the songs. Thomas Velsor for laying down some real tight bass parts. And Misha Tsiganov for his wonderful piano work.
It’s not very often I have such a great experience mixing songs, but James Meslin knocked it out of the park on this one!! I received his 3 mixes and was so pleased with them. There were hardly any revisions that had to be made, allowing me to sleep so much better at night. Haha, I usually drive myself crazy with the sound of my songs. Thanks James!! The same goes with my mastering Engineer. Steve over at Rogue Planet Mastering was right on the money!!
Many, many thanks go to Tim Shortell for his great video editing. I worked him hard on this project. I wanted to really make the videos as exciting as possible, and he did just that. Also in regards to the video editing, I have to thank my wife Leslie Lee who sat with me for hours as we directed where to cut the video, and which player/camera to focus on when. It was a lot of work and I was very happy to be able to run all of this by her. Love you the most Leslie!!!
Thanks also go to my friend Tom Silvino for all of his art work. Tom has been designing my CD covers and pretty much all of my art work for years. He is a super talent.
I also want to thank all of my equipment endorsements. Without all of this amazing gear I play, this project would not sound as amazing as it does! Not even close! Thanks to everyone at Yamaha Acoustic Drummers , SABIAN, Remo drum heads, Vicfirth Drum Sticks, LP – Latin Percussion , Super Phones, Beatnik,Axis Pedals, Tunebot Drummuffs, and Cympad International.
Many thanks also go to one of my best friends Derek Roddy who has helped me very much with my drum sound and the recording process.
A big thank you to Mike Sorrentino for all his help and input on the music business.
As you can see, it takes a village to complete these types of creative projects. I hope everyone enjoys the end result. Please stay tuned tomorrow for when the videos are released.
