Top NYC Drummer John Favicchia comes full circle!
After years of touring with Jazz Fusion bands and drum clinics, John is going back to his roots. “When I first started playing the drum set, I loved to play rock, progressive rock, as well as singer song writer music. At a certain point, I wanted to expand my playing. I started to study all styles of music. After some years of intense practice, I went out and started to play every style from Big Bands to Trio Jazz, to smooth jazz to Latin and Fusion. I also did many record dates in NYC in every style of music you can think of. Then in 1990, I put my own Fusion band together using the best players in NYC. 0 New Video posted- Johns first Drum Cover
Hi everyone! This is my first Drum Cover video. In the past, when I first saw drummers doing drum covers on YouTube, I just didn’t get it. I thought to myself- why cover a song? Shouldn’t a drummer play to original music? Shouldn’t he/she write their own drum part? Shouldn’t they be playing with a band?? Isn’t that the true art of drumming? I grew up with the mindset of drumming being original and breaking new ground. And, years ago, the recording technology didn’t allow for ‘after the fact’ playing. And to me, why play a song exactly the way it was originally recorded ( other than if the band leader/producer specifically wants it that way)? Where was the art in that? Recently, the mixing and recording software/technology has advanced enough that drummers are able to record their drums to cover tracks and actually put their own spin on them. Drummers now can play the songs with their own feel. They can change the groove, the fills and be creative. Now this is art!
I enjoy watching drummers here on YouTube playing to all different styles of covers, but I questioned whether this is something a pro player should do. This is for the kids right? So instead of playing a cover myself, I started to write and arrange original rock/pop songs myself, but never felt that the tunes were good enough to seriously record them and video them. For those of you who don’t know me, I am known as more of a jazz fusion drummer. I can write that style of music just fine, but really wanted to play and record more rock music recently.
One of my favorite rock bands is a band called Switchfoot. I love their music. I go see them every time they come to NYC. They have great CDs and live shows. I would love to play with them one day, but I realize that they are a true band as well as childhood friends. So, I don’t think I will be touring with them anytime soon. But I want to play and record/video their music. So, a few months back, I finally came to a decision. Why not do drum covers of their songs? Well, I gave it a try and I loved it! It was so much fun playing and recording to one of my favorite songs. I decided for my first one I would just play the song just as I felt it. Close to the original drum parts, but I added my own style and a few original grooves on the verses.
I hope you enjoy this video. It was very satisfying for me to record my drumming to one of my favorite songs. Pease subscribe to my channel so you will know when I post new videos. I will be posting more drum covers as well as my usual drum solos and drum clinic footage.
Enjoy!!

I loved playing that music with all of those great musicians.
But then in the summer of 2003 I heard The Beautiful Letdown album by Switchfoot. For years after this, Switchfoot’s music kept getting under my skin. I was also listening to great bands like Coldplay, John Mayer with Steve Jordon on drums, Styx with my good friend and awesome drummer Todd Sucherman, and all of my buddies with Billy Joel’s band. And as time went on, I got more and more excited and inspired by them all. I continued to go out and hear many rock bands in NYC as well as Switchfoot whenever they came to town. All of those live shows were so inspirational and so powerful! I knew at that point I had to make the switch back to rock!”
In October of 2011, John stopped booking his own band to follow his heart and to play more groove oriented music. “I needed to spend some time practicing simple grooves at slow tempos and work on making them feel great. After all the fusion music and drum solo music I was playing, this took some adjustment.” At the same time, John started to play in Brooklyn and NYC in Blues and Alternative Rock bands. “I loved these gigs! I especially enjoyed playing with the alternative Rock band called Robbers. The songs that the band leader Andrew Accardi writes are awesome. Perfect music for where I want my drumming to be. Great drum grooves with awesome lyrics and melodies. I also get great satisfaction from making the song writer happy. It feels good to help the song writer realize his/ her vision.”
As John enters 2014 his new goals are bigger than ever. Keep an eye out for John as he indeed comes full circle back to playing his rock roots. Heartfelt grooves with spirit, power and passion! For bookings, please contact Leslie Lee at All Star Bookings at allstarbookings@aol.com or (516) 526-9646.
