Hi Friends!

The last 2 years or so, I have been working with my good friend and amazing Composer/ Producer Benny Reid. We have been recording drum solos and grooves for licensing. Sometimes Benny will ask me to record a specific groove at a specific tempo. Sometimes I will just record myself improvising for periods of time. Then we decide what works, and mix and edit. Then it all goes up to a server where content creators can license the drum parts for their films, TV spots, Podcasts, songs, corporate presentations and so on. We have had some really great wins with this formula. Recently I did two longer sessions where I got into a creative vibe and tracked with a movie sound track in mind. I am releasing these sessions as an EP!! I wanted to document these tracks to let people know I do this kind of work, as well as just have it as part of my discography.

I recorded and mixed this EP myself. I am very happy with the results. Thanks to Chris Kyriakou for the great cover art! Thanks to Benny Reid for all his teamwork on our now over 75 drum tracks! I hope you enjoy this EP.

From John: Dear Listener, Thank you for your interest in my music and my playing. I hope you enjoy the songs as well as the musicianship on this CD. It has been 3 years since I recorded my last solo CD, World Time. It has been a time of much growth and learning- both personally and musically. So, this CD reflects my new experiences and learning over the past 3 years. I learned that for me, the reason for recording and playing music is in the ‘doing’, and for what it does for my spirit. I hope this comes across to you, the listener, as well.

The last few years have also found me learning about meditation. I found that through meditation I could connect to my spirit and clear my head of all thoughts, thus preparing myself to play and record better. Doing this CD has been an unbelievable journey, from building a small studio in my house and then learning how to operate all the gear, to finding writers to write me songs in which I could express myself fully. From choosing the right players, and organizing the arrangements, to rehearsing the band. At the same time, keeping my own drumming in the best shape possible. Since I did not write most of the songs on this CD, each song became a separate project of its own. Therefore, taking a little more time, but having a greater end result. The result being that I could customize each song to have the musicians I felt would sound best.

Some words on the meaning of the title: Each of us has a “Dharma,” a purpose in life. When we are in Dharma we love and enjoy our work. Drumming is my Dharma. We should also use our Dharma to help benefit others, so I hope this CD brings many people joy. I am also donating a percentage from each CD sale to cancer research. “Everyone has a purpose in life … a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals”. Deepak Chopra

Once again, thanks for listening and enjoy!

Thank you for your interest in my music and my playing. I hope you enjoy the songs as well as the musicianship on this CD. Since 2018, all of the recordings I had been doing went out to all the virtual streaming sites. They were never made into a CD or some form of hard copy media. The last few months I have had the feeling that I want these recordings to be on a CD. I want them to live on something tangible. So, I decided to put them out on a compilation CD. I also included some live versions of a few songs from my Dharma Live CD from 2002 that never made it to an official CD.

Once again, thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy my new CD, “Tangible”.

Warm Regards,
John

Gonna Be Alright
(Chieli Minucci/Chieli Music)

A little bit of acoustic blues and a little bit of bluesy Stratocaster for ya, supported by Fav and Brooksman's driving grooves, propelling the whole jam. Guys on the job, folks working out on the track, steelworkers pile-driving, riveting those steel girders up high.

This track was inspired in 2021 by drum guru, John Favicchia (John Fav). He had reached out to me after moving from Long Island to SE Florida, seeking fusion musicians with whom to collaborate. He told me about some of his NY experiences and introduced me to a few of his original compositions. One in particular, called Kukuc 2020, inspired me to write Acceptance. The sax in this piece was performed and recorded by the one and only Ismael Vergara, with whom I had the pleasure of collaborating about a decade ago on a piece co-written with vocalist, Marcel Morejon. Ismael had posted a moving solo dedication to the late, great David Sanborn upon his passing. His sound in that post caused me to abandon my initial effort to get a different saxophonist completely. He was perfect for the part, and his reading, chops, improvisational talent and direction, as well as his recording and engineering skills, turned out to be exactly what I had been seeking while this song was in production.
